The registry

The registry was founded in 1995. It is located in the records section of the Service de Carcinologie et Radiotherapie of the CHU de Brazzaville, which also serves as the records store of the department.

The registry is currently led by Pr. Péko Jean-Félix. The registry is staffed by one full time cancer registrar Mr Dimitry MBOUNGOU.

Source of finance:

The Registry is financed by the Ministry of Health and the Marien NGouabi University. In 2012, it has benefitted from a generous donation from the First Lady of Congo.

Registry population

Cases from the whole of Brazzaville are registered. The most recent population data are from the census of 2007, at which time the population of the registration area was 1.376,382.

Sources of information for the registry

The registry collects information from 4 hospitals:

  1. Le Centre Hospitalier et Universitaire de Brazzaville
  2. Hôpital de Base de Makélélélé
  3. L’Hôpital central  des armées Pierre Mobengo
  4. Hôpital de Base de Talangaï.

Four private clinics where patients may be hospitalized also provide data to the registry:

  1. Clinique Manouana (Dr. Th. Nkounkou-Manouana)
  2. Clinique des Rosiers (Pr. LH. Iloki)
  3. Clinique Sécurex (Dr. D.Ovaga)
  4. Clinique COGEMO (Dr. Bantsimba)

The registration form is shown as Attachment.

The Service de Carcinologie et Radiotherapie has radiotherapy (a Cobalt THERATRON  780 C) but at present it is not functioning because of the lack of a radiotherapist and physicist; personnel are expected to be in place at the end of 2013. . This by far the most important single source of information for the registry (43% of all  registrations in 2011). The other clinical departments at the CHU provide most of the remaining cases, while only 7% cases were found in the remaining 4 sources.

There is only one histopathology laboratory in Brazzaville (at the CHU) which does the bulk for the work for the country (only 3 qualified histopathologists). The laboratory is not used as a separate source of information (pathology reports are accessed via the case notes in other services).

Information on deaths is obtained from a hospital registry and municipal service.

Methods of registration

Registration is active, in that cases are identified either in the Service de Carcinologie et Radiotherapie  (the registry office  acts as a store for records of this service) or by visits to the other services in the CHU, where cases are traced from the registers of admissions/discharges.

The other hospitals are visited from time to time (weekly) but this is hampered by lack of transport.

Cases of cancer in persons not resident in Brazzaville are registered separately.

Data management:

The registry has used CANREG 5 since the beginning of 2012.  The old data set (in CANREG 4) was imported at that time.

Data analysis/results

The cancer registrar prepares an annual report. The numbers of registrations has remained rather constant over the years. The most recent report is for 2011, and based on 495 registered cases.
