Basic training course in English (16-27th June)
The team of Kampala Cancer Registry has hosted a 10 days basic training for Francis Okongo (registrar, the Gulu Cancer Registry) from 16-27th June. A follow up visit by Ms Sarah Nambooze (Kampala) to the St Mary’s Hospital, Lacor (Gulu) for the provision of training and advice with respect to establishing a population based cancer registry was carried out from 16-26th September. Basic training course in Portuguese (14-25th July)
Dr Gonçalo Lacerda acted as the international faculty on the AFCRN Basic training course in Portuguese. This 10 days course took place from 14th – 25th July in Maputo, Mozambique. The aim of this course was to provide basic training on cancer registration for the 4 newly employed staff from the Maputo Cancer Registry and one staff from the Beira Cancer Registry. Report available on request. A further practical training section and a follow up consultancy visit have been proposed for the first half of 2015.
Basic training course in French (11-29th August)
In collaboration with the Abidjan Cancer Registry, the AFCRN training course in French was held from 11-29th August 2014. Despite the Ebola epidemic around West Africa, nine international trainees (from 7 countries) attended the course. The course aimed to cover cancer registration methods including basics of oncology and pathology, case finding, recording, analysis, and the use of CanReg 5. A detailed report on the course is available on request.
Advanced training course in English (18-27th November)
Due to insufficient fund, we now have to postpone the course, until we can find a source of funds.
CanReg 5 Training
Technical support and enhanced training will be provided to member registries in Namibia, Beira and Guinee (June/July 2014).
Ms Gladys Chebet (Eldoret Cancer Registry, Kenya), AFCRN CanReg expert, visited the Namibia National Cancer Registry from 16th-20th June to repair and install the CanReg 5 system; import missing data from CanReg4 and to provide sufficient and necessary training to the local registrar. Report available on request. Further onsite training on the use of CanReg 5 is needed and it has been proposed for early 2015.
Ms Cecile Ingabire (Kigali Cancer Registry, Rwanda), AFCRN CanReg expert, visited the Beira Cancer Registry from 7th – 11th July to install the CanReg5 system in the Registry (in Portuguese); import the existing data and provide sufficient and necessary training to the local registrar. Report available on request. A further practical training in Maputo for the cancer registry staff from Beira has been proposed for early 2015.
Dr Louise Mbus, supported by the AFCRN, visited the Guinee Cancer Registry in Conakry (21st July – 1st August) to set up a new CanReg5 system for the registry accordingly and to assist in migrating the old dataset to CanReg5 and provide sufficient and necessary training to the local registrar. Fellowship
Ms Ntuthu Somdyala, with the support of a Calum Muir Fellowship (IACR), visited Dr Parkin at the Nuffield Department of Population Health (NDPH), University of Oxford, from 8-26th September 2014. The purpose of this visit was to 1) prepare a report for the cancer registry of the Eastern Cape Province, for the period 2008-2012, based on the AFCRN Model Report. 2) collaborate in an analysis of trends in the incidence of 8 major cancers (Oesophagus, Liver, Lung, Kaposi, Breast, Cervix, Prostate) for the 15 year period 1997 – 2012. This has now been published (Int J Cancer. 2014 Sep 18. doi: 10.1002/ijc.29224).
Dr Robai Gakunga, is visiting Dr Parkin at the Nuffield Department of Population Health (NDPH), University of Oxford, from 10-28th November 2014. The purpose of the visit is to finalise a report on structure and use of data by cancer registries, members of the African Network of Cancer Registries, based on a questionnaire survey, and prepare an article for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
